OBJECTIVE

Are you looking for a challenging and rewarding paid internship where you can use your knowledge of agriculture, along with learning how the industry of insurance plays a crucial role on how Michigan Farmers conduct business? Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan is seeking a motivated individual to join the Farm and Agribusiness Underwriting team!

 

During this fourteen-week internship program, you will be spending most of your time with the Farm and Agribusiness Underwriting department. The selected individual will be spending time with both our field and in office underwriter. The intern will have the opportunity to see many different kinds and sizes of farms, along with how insurance underwriting is done. The intern will learn what insurance underwriting is, and how it plays a pivotal role in how Michigan farmers manage their farm operation. The intern will also spend some time with our Risk Management Services Team to learn how loss control benefits both the insurance company and the farmer.

 

In addition to time spent learning the industry and walking farms with our underwriters, the intern will also be assigned several projects and tasks, all of which will benefit the Farm and Agribusiness Department accomplish underwriting goals. At the end of the fourteen-week internship, the intern will be expected to complete a Capstone presentation outlining everything they worked on, how their projects benefited the underwriting department, all their experiences during the fourteen weeks, what they learned, and some suggestions of how the department could improve.

 

The intern will be working closely with department management. This position will primarily work from home, with days on the road. Every Tuesday the intern is expected to report to the office. Management and the intern will meet weekly to go over status of projects, and how things are going. In addition to the time spent with underwriting, the intern will also have an opportunity to participate in rotational days, which will be a day spent with another department to learn about different areas of the company. These other departments include Crop Insurance, Marketing, Claims, and Michigan Farm Bureau Membership. The intern will also have the chance to participate in group networking activities with other interns from around the company.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Gain an understanding of key functions through on the job training and development.

 

Collaborate with department staff to contribute on various processes and projects.

 

Assist department managers with day-to-day tasks and procedures.

 

Undertake special assignments as instructed by department manager.

 

Build relationships with department stakeholders and contribute toward company and department goals.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be enrolled at a college or university and have declared a major course of study working towards graduation.

 

Proven track record as a hard worker, and excellent team player.

 

Outstanding customer service and communication skills.

 

Be familiar with computer equipment and how to operate basic software programs.
