OBJECTIVE

To carry out the in-house legal function of Michigan Farm Bureau and its Affiliated Companies by ensuring that the companies carry on their business in a lawful manner, and to carry out the corporate secretarial duties required by law and the bylaws of the companies. To be responsible for the administrative functions related to corporate internal audit activities and provide oversight of a corporate-wide human resource management program.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Advise all Boards of Directors, levels of management, and administrative staffs of the companies with respect to laws and regulations affecting their respective functions.

 

Counsel with directors, officers, and all levels of management of the companies, and research legal questions in order to advise such individuals as to the legal implications of proposed actions, policies, and programs, and recommend appropriate courses of action in conformance with the law and established policies.

 

Develop a close working relationship with directors, officers, and all levels of management of the companies in carrying out the support and guidance functions of the Legal Department.

 

Keep the directors, officers, and all levels of management of the companies apprised of changes in the laws and regulations affecting their respective companies, and advise them of potential legal problems and opportunities.

 

Develop intimate knowledge of the programs, practices, procedures, and policies of the companies, and assist with revisions and additions thereto.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:

  • Degree in law from an accredited college of law required.
  • Minimum seven years’ experience as an attorney with experience handling corporate, insurance, or environmental law matters required.
  • Member of the State Bar of Michigan and admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the State of Michigan.
  • Must possess high personal standards necessary to handle extremely confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Ability to establish amicable and trusted relationships with directors, management, and business associates.
  • Ability to supervise others.
  • Ability to quickly analyze legal problems and render a clear and concise legal opinion thereon.
